Friday Favorites

Happy Friday everyone! This week has definitely flown by and after the snowfall we had in Toronto yesterday, it feels like Christmas is coming. Tonight is my office holiday party. But before the festivities, here are three things I’m loving from this week:

Some latte art from the board game cafe beside our place:

The Kill Shakespeare Board Game launch where Keith had his first published comic book story as well. So proud!

Christmas lights while watching the mid-season finales of The Flash and Arrow then recording Shoot, Quick!

May your weekend be filled with holiday cheer!

“Shoot, Quick!” Episode 3 + Podcast Suggestions

I’M BACKKKK in this week’s “Shoot, Quick!”-our Arrow & The Flash podcast. Bear with us as we slowly get the hang of this podcasting business. Listen HERE for our commentary on Episode 6 of The Flash, where Girder makes an appearance, and Episode 7 of Arrow, with Cupid, Oli’s deadly stalker.
And if you’re new to the world of podcasts and are looking for some good ones to listen to, here are a few of my favorites:

“Hey Kids, Comics!” – Father and son hosts Andrew and Micheal (yes, that’s how he spells it) Leyland discuss their love of comics and other geeky things. They’re hilarious, insightful and just so much fun to listen to.

“Serial” – How have you not heard about this yet?

“The Missfits” – If you’re looking for a podcast featuring awesome ladies, then this is it. It’s hosted by my friend, Stephanie Cooke, and I dare you not to fall in love with it.

“Shoot, Quick!” Episode 2

As I mentioned last week, our Flash/Arrow podcast is up and running (pun definitely intended). I had a work outing last Thursday so I couldn’t join in on the recording for Episode 2, but I did listen to it and it’s very good. I’m almost scared that I’ll ruin it next week. Give it a listen here, if you wanna hear a roundtable discussion of The Flash S1E5 and Arrow S3E6 before you watch Arrow tonight.

They talk all about Plastique, Arsenal, Black Canary, predictions for the big crossover event and more. Also I definitely did not realize that Cupid was intentionally in the background scenes, so thanks guys for pointing that out. I should be back in the next podcast which we will record on Thursday.

Happy New Comic Book Day!

It Happened This Week…

Happy Thursday! This week saw several rumors, some confirmations and quite a bit of trailers. We have a lot to cover so let’s get on with it.

…in the TARDIS

We’re almost halfway through the new series of Doctor Who with the Twelfth Doctor and now I can safely say that I like Peter Capaldi. I’ve seen this Doctor interact with the Paternoster Gang, daleks, Robin Hood and in a horror, heist and present-day London setting. I’ve gotten used to his more alien nature. It’s a very interesting and entertaining take on the Doctor. Bring on the second half!

…in Marvel’s 1946
In a very-much-expected announcement, Dominic Cooper will officially reprise his role as Howard Stark in Agent Carter. SO excited to see him interact with Peggy.

…in Greendale Community College
Yvette Nicole Brown, our beloved Shirley, will not be coming back for Season 6 of Community. According to TV Guide, she has decided to take some time away in order to care for her father. Our thoughts are with her and her family. We’re definitely going to miss the heart of the study group!

…in Atlantis

Here’s the trailer for the DC Animated film Justice League: Throne of Atlantis. As someone who has not yet seen the previous Justice League: War, I’m only slightly interested. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I love Aquaman but you know how I feel about some of the shenanigans happening in the New 52. I might watch this movie…I might not.

…in Gotham
I know I’ve been hating on the first two episodes of Gotham but this trailer on the upcoming villains and potential story lines of the season has got me excited, which is saying something. I’ll just ignore every Alfred scene there is.

…in Central City
Set your DVRs to record about five minutes more of The Flash premiere on Tuesday, October 7th. The CW just announced that it’ll be three minutes longer.

…in the rumor mill
Fair warning, these are not confirmed yet and the sources may not be the most reliable. According to the Latino Review, Ben Affleck might be in a solo Batman movie potentially entitled: The Batman. Yup. So you understand if I’m not too excited about this news.
Now for Marvel’s rumor of the week: The Daily Marvelite reports that The Avengers 3 might be split into two parts, like Deathly Hallows or Mockingjay. This one might actually be true. I can see them splitting the Infinity Gauntlet storyline into two parts. Although this article has some good arguments against this.

Have a super(hero) day!

Must-Watch Fall 2014 TV Shows

Happy Wednesday! Now that October is here, we can finally enjoy the return of all our favorite shows as well as discover new ones to be obsessed with. But it can be difficult to choose which ones to devote your valuable free time to. That’s where this list comes in. Here’s what I’ll be religiously watching every day, every week and what you should be too:

MONDAYS – Gotham
Despite the less-than-epic pilot, I’m sticking with this show for better or for worse. I’m too much of a fan of the characters to stop, even if Ivy Pepper’s name is ridiculous and Alfred acted like a giant ass in the first episode (and continues to do so, I might add). I’m willing to ignore a bunch of things just so I can watch Oswald Cobblepot and Selina Kyle every week.

TUESDAYS – The Flash
Fans of Arrow, like myself, are already guaranteed to like this show. It’s set in the same world and they already have a cross-over event planned. But even if you haven’t watched Arrow, this show can serve as a gateway drug into the world of superheroes and comics. It’s lighter and funnier than the other grim and gritty comic-based properties out there, which is a welcome change, but with enough action to keep you entertained.

Tell me again why you’re not watching this show yet? You’ve only missed two of the best seasons of TV there is. Seriously, Arrow is the reason for all the recent comic book TV shows cropping up in every network. What are you waiting for? You have a week to binge-watch every episode you missed before Season 3 starts. Go.

THURSDAY – How To Get Away With Murder
The good news is that you’ve only missed the pilot episode of this show. The bad news is that once you’ve finished watching it, you’ll still have to wait hours for episode 2. And as someone who was blown away by the pilot, let me tell you every minute of waiting for the next episode is torture. It’s just that good. I feel like this should be on Netflix so they can just drop the whole season all at once. I can’t remember falling for a show this hard, this fast. Even with Arrow, it started out slow for me. Must be the Viola Davis effect.

FRIDAY – Constantine
Whatever you do, do not judge this show by the pilot. I know it probably goes without saying but in this case it’s especially important because the female lead in the first episode, Lucy Griffiths, left the show and they decided not to reshoot the pilot. Which means that a) if you liked her, don’t get attached and know that no matter how important they make her seem, she’s leaving or b) if you didn’t like her, then you don’t have to wait long to see her gone. Out of all the shows, this is actually the one I’m most worried about. Let’s hope they can retain viewers despite the bizarre circumstances of the pilot. They have a couple weeks to reshuffle episodes if need be to explain her departure. Stay tuned.

Happy Hump Day and New Comic Book Day!

It Happened This Week…

Happy Thursday everyone! It’s time for my weekly round-up of nerdy news. Now I’ll start off with something that happened on Friday last week so I didn’t include it in the previous “It Happened” post but it’s pretty huge news especially in our household:

ICYMI…this happened last week
I squealed when I read the news that TNT is close to ordering a pilot for Titans, revolving around Nightwing, former Robin Dick Grayson, and yup, the Teen Titans. And even more excited? My boyfriend Keith. While the majority of DC fans probably prefer the Justice League or the Justice Society, Keith is obsessed with the Teen Titans and the Legion of Superheroes. I myself got hooked with Perez and Wolfman’s 80s New Teen Titans run, which is what the show is supposed to be based on. SO. FREAKING. EXCITED.

Back to our regularly scheduled program:

…in District 13

This is the next big movie coming out so thanks for finally releasing an actual trailer, guys!

…in 1946
Some pretty exciting Agent Carter casting news was announced regarding Jarvis! Yes, Tony Stark’s AI butler will make his live-action debut as Howard Stark’s real-life butler played by James D’Arcy.

…in Central City
A familiar face to fans of the original The Flash series is coming to CW’s The Flash. Dr. Tina McGee played by Amanda Pays will come back, not as Barry Allen’s love interest which she was originally but as an employee of a rival company to STAR Labs.

…in Hell’s Kitchen, New York
Some interesting casting news was announced for Netflix’s Daredevil, Scott Glenn has been cast as Matt Murdock’s mentor, Stick. Now, I’m not familiar with the Daredevil comics but apparently Stick is supposed to be of Japanese origin, even though it’s not explicitly stated. Huh.

…in the TARDIS

As a big fan of heist movies, this next episode is right up my alley.

…in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe
Since we’re desperate for any and all news regarding the Avengers sequel, Marvel threw us a bone by giving us the official synopsis of Age of Ultron. It doesn’t really tell us anything new but it assembles all the info and all the characters set to appear in the film in a nice, neat little package.

…in Starling City
You know how Arrow has just been casting Spartacus (one of my fandoms) alumni left and right? Well they’ve done it again with Nick Tarabay cast as Captain Boomerang. It’s interesting to note that while the majority of the Starz show’s cast was Australian, they got the one American to play an Australian villain. I’m not knocking the casting choice, just pointing out the irony.

And finally enjoy, you’re welcome:

It Happened This Week…

Time for another nerdy news round-up. This week featured major casting news all around plus a couple of teasers for upcoming shows. Without further ado, let’s get on with it!

…in Central City
Guess who’s coming to town alongside Wentworth Miller’s Captain Cold? Prison Break co-star Dominic Purcell will be Heat Wave (there’s a space in between, people). According to THR, both characters will make their debut in episode four. I love how early they’re assembling The Rogues. Come on October, get here faster!

…in Starling City

WOO HOO. I’m so ready for Season 3. Also they’ve cast Ra’s Al Ghul and it’s not who I wanted it to be, cough Oded Fehr cough, but I have faith in them.

…in the DC Cinematic Universe
Wait, what’s this? I’m writing about something other than the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Well sort of. Tech Times reports that Warner Bros. has registered four comic-book film domains: Justice League, Wonder Woman, Shazam and Aquaman. So I guess yay but can they just make it official already and announce these movies?

…in a galaxy far, far away
In crossover casting news, the BBC announced Game of Thrones‘ Syrio Forel aka Miltos Yerolemou will be in Star Wars Episode VII, albeit not in a major role. Still though, file in awesome news of the week. If I were any good with Photoshop I’d replace his sword with a lightsaber, although you can probably already find that online.

…in S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters

I still have to catch up on Season 1 but pretty sweet teaser for the new season.

…in Kahndaq

Screen Shot 2014-09-03 at 10.20.18 PM
Yup, if you know that fictional country, then you know exactly what news I’m talking about…In this week’s Best News Ever, Dwayne Johnson has just announced via Twitter that he has made his choice. The Rock will be Black Adam in the upcoming Shazam movie and I COULD NOT BE MORE EXCITED. Of course that needed to be in all caps.

Happy Thursday! GO SEAHAWKS.
