3 Books You Should Read Now

Happy Hump Day! I’ve been so busy at work that I had zero idea what to write about for today, so here’s a quick little post on my reading recommendations:

Yes Please. If you still haven’t read Amy Poehler’s hilarious book, you are seriously missing out. It stands out from all the other celebrity part-memoir-part-blog books with its sincerity, hilarity and just plain wonderful-ness.

The Night Circus. I had been holding off on reading this book but I finally succumbed to peer pressure. The consensus was right. It has mystery, romance, magic…how is this not a movie yet?

Paper Towns. Read it before the movie starring Cara Delevingne comes out (the poster just got released). Just like The Fault in Our Stars, this book features a quirky but cool lead characters that you’ll fall in love with.

Keep calm and read on!

Christmas Gift Guide 2014: Fandom

Happy New Comic Book Day! Part Three of my gift guide series continues with today’s post on all the geeky gifts your nerdy heart would want:

FotorCreated

1. No matter what fandom you’re a part of, there is definitely a Funko Pop! figure for you. I like to get mine from Paradise Comics.

2. I would be a terrible girlfriend if I didn’t recommend the 4th volume of Kill Shakespeare collecting “The Mask of Night” run, with the back-up story written by the boyfriend. You can get your copy starting Wednesday next week from Paradise as well. End of shameless plug.

3. My love of baking and Star Wars come together for the perfect gift.

4. This game is perfect for the board game lover in your circle, beginner or veteran. Very simple concept with gorgeous art, board and pieces. In my opinion, better than the original.

5. Who wouldn’t want ice shaped like Daleks and TARDISes?

6. I wish I had gotten the box set rather than getting them individually, but now I can give them to a friend.

Happy Hump Day everyone.

Happy Halloween one and all! Looking forward to a relaxing night, playing board games and watching my go-to Halloween movies. But first, here are a few of my favorite things:
The best co-worker ever left a surprise on my desk!

A trip to IKEA to replace our bedroom lamp wasn’t complete without having Swedish meatballs (complete with chocolate milk in honor of our close friends, Chris & Megh, getting engaged)

The boyfriend says “I’m sorry” with books (comics included)

Two very good and very Halloween-appropriate brews that I recommend (for more, click here):

And last but not least, this week, I encountered the legendary ghost train during rush hour. I had a seat! There was this much empty space:

Have a happy & safe Halloween weekend everyone!

Happy Friday everyone! It’s officially October and today is Mean Girls Day in case you didn’t know. This week has been wonderful.

From celebrating the news of a new job at WVRST

We definitely toasted a lot with their Oktoberfest beer sampler, which I highly recommend. We loved Beau’s Night Marzen so much we got a bottle to bring home.
IMG_3137.JPG
I also spent a whole day with my nose buried in John Green’s Looking for Alaska after loving his The Fault In Our Stars.
IMG_3139.JPG
A meeting brought me down to King East where I promptly saw this awesome skull piece. I want it in my apartment since I’m obsessed with skulls. Plus it reminded me of Halloween…
IMG_3143.JPG
Speaking of Halloween, I’m continuing to embrace fall with this Mill Street Autumn Harvest Sampler that includes both their Oktoberfest beer and their pumpkin beer aptly named Nightmare on Mill Street, which conveniently helps out my mission to test as many pumpkin beers this season.

This weekend will be spent enjoying my last few days off before I officially start my grown-up, 9-5 job. I’ll continue to post as often as I can but might skip some days if I get too busy. Hope everyone has an awesome weekend!

TFIOS Book + Movie REVIEW

For those unfamiliar with “TFIOS”, it’s short for The Fault In Our Stars a young adult novel by John Green that became a movie starring Shailene Woodley & Ansel Elgort, which was released a couple months ago. Now a little background before my SPOILER-FREE combo review. My friend Megh is a huge fan of John Green and so is my boyfriend Keith. He’s been following John for years via his YouTube channel. I watched a couple of his videos and while they’re entertaining, I’ve never considered myself a “Nerdfighter”. And yes I’ve heard all the great reviews about the book TFIOS and seen the brightly-colored book cover displayed prominently in the must-read sections of bookstores everywhere but I’ve never really had the urge to read it. Until finally when the movie came out and I was bombarded from every social media platform with gifs, quotes, fan art and photos from the book and the film. There was no escaping it. Curiosity over this phenomenon got the better of me and I purchased the book.
The_Fault_in_Our_Stars
Well, I was not prepared for what I found between the bright covers of this novel. It was devoured in a day. I could not put it down. It’s been quite a while since I’ve read a book that has genuinely touched me. I enjoyed Green’s writing style immensely. It can go from goofy humor to tragically beautiful prose from one page to the next. At last I understood all the references on Tumblr. There are so many quotable lines in this book. And the story? Absolutely wonderful. It’s not just a love story. It’s not just a story about cancer. It’s about two unique individuals who experience the adventure of a lifetime and the main character just happens to have cancer. It’s written so realistically in such a relatable manner, regardless of whether you’ve encountered the disease or not. It has all the trappings of a great young adult novel but instead of magic, you have fate, and instead of a dystopia, you have the inevitability of oblivion. I must say for a book that deals with sickness and death, there are surprisingly a lot of laugh out loud moments. Or maybe I shouldn’t be surprised. Just because you have a terminal illness doesn’t mean you can’t still make jokes or fall in love. I can’t say enough good things about this book. Notice how I’m not spoiling anything? That’s because I highly urge you to purchase this book immediately and give it a read, even if you’ve already seen the movie. I for one can’t bring myself to watch a movie based on a book without reading it first.
Fault_in_our_stars
After reading, I sat down to watch the film. It’s out on DVD & Blu-ray in case you wanna watch it. It did a great job of adapting the source material. From my understanding Green was involved with the film quite a bit, which always helps. The book isn’t that long so I thought they’d actually include everything in it but there are a couple of minor plot points that didn’t make it into the movie like for example, there was no mention of Caroline (read the books!). It was so cool to see Amsterdam on screen. I have a Dutch neighbor and I’ve added it to my list of must-visit places. They really captured the tone, the world and the essence of the story. I think the casting was spot=on. Shailene Woodley did a great job. Ansel Elgort blew me away though. Aside from Divergent, I don’t think he’s been in anything huge but wow, what an amazing actor. Don’t forget to bring tissues, seriously. I’m actually pretty relieved I watched it at home since I would’ve looked like a racoon with mascara everywhere had I seen it in the cinema. As much as I enjoyed the movie, like with a lot of cases, I still love the book more.

Okay? Okay. (TFIOS inside joke!)

Hopefully this convinces you to give TFIOS a chance if you haven’t yet. Happy Hump Day everyone!

Happy Friday! With two parties this weekend, one birthday, the other a going away, and with Sunday Football finally coming back, I’m looking forward to spending it with friends and taking advantage of this warm weather we’ve been having in Toronto.

Went for a jog this week but came back with some Chipotle and a whole lot of beers…whoops!

Finally jumped on The Fault in Our Stars bandwagon and it has really exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend this amazing book if you still haven’t read it. Once I watch the movie, I might post a review.
