How was everyone’s week? Freezing? Just checking. The cold is getting to everyone but hopefully the last week of February is a little warmer. Last night, I finished watching all the Best Picture nominees and I am looking forward to my annual Oscar party this weekend. To celebrate the weekend, here are a few things that made me smile from this week:

The way to my heart, beer & cheese

Tasty Tuesday: 3 Montreal Spots To Try

Last time I went to Montreal, I talked about the best cupcake store there. This time around, my mom and my sister introduced me to some new places that were super delicious. Here are three Montreal spots to try (ok, one is in a suburb but still):

1. Schwartz’s
gallery19
Alright, I’m pretty sure you’ve either already tried it or have heard countless recommendations but I cannot stress enough how absolutely vital it is for your happiness to come to Montreal and get Schwartz’s smoked meat. We skipped the dine-in experience because the line is always too long, even in winter. They conveniently have a take-out section where you can enjoy their delicious sandwiches and my personal favorite way to eat smoked meat, on a poutine.

2. Mai Xiang Yuan

While not as big as the one here in Toronto, there are a few gems worth checking out at Montreal’s Chinatown and this dumpling establishment is one of them. Look out for the baby blue sign and prepare yourself for cheap, yummy goodness. Bring cash since they don’t accept debit or credit. The place is pretty small and gets full real fast for lunch and weekends but it’s so worth it. Their dumpling combinations work amazingly well and everything is cooked perfectly, whether you get steamed or fried.

3. Prohibition Bar (Ste-Therese)

Ok, so it’s technically not in Montreal and it’s definitely not ideal to take public transport to this bar but if you love craft beer, I suggest trying your best to check this place out. We had a surprise welcome back party for one of my best friends here and I just loved the decor, the theme, and of course, the beer. Also side note: One of the greatest things about Quebec is that we make the best beer and we sell them at the corner store.

Happy Tuesday one and all!

Christmas Gift Guide 2014: Food

Happy Tuesday all! Part Two of my gift guide series continues today with ideas for all your foodie friends:
FotorCreated

1. Inspired by the Beer & Chocolate pairing class taught by Crystal Luxmore, I’m bringing this Raspberry Lambic and Dark Chocolate for the office X’mas party gift exchange.

2. You can’t go wrong with the Top 12 most popular teas from DAVID’s TEA.

3. Who doesn’t love cheese or bread or monograms?

4. I’m in love with these glasses. I may just get them for myself.

5. For the beer-lover in your life, this mixed pack of abbey ales should do just the trick. This might also end up in the “keeping it for myself” pile.

So glad that my local office bar is this one:

Movie + Food Pairings

Inspired partly by this post and partly by The Hundred-Foot Journey (just read the novel and am planning on watching the film), I got to thinking about what movie and food pairings I would actually take the time to prepare then consume while watching. The important part for me would be that I’d need to really like the food that went with the movie in order to go through the effort of making it, instead of just microwaving some popcorn. I’ve narrowed it down to three movies, two I’ve seen, one I haven’t but heard good things about, with food pairings that range from beginner to expert. Here are my top three recommended movie + food combinations:

Beginner
Fotor110417074Drinking Buddies + Beer
This requires little to no effort. You just need to buy beer, open a bottle and turn on Netflix. I can’t believe I haven’t reviewed this movie yet. Watched it a couple months ago when we were bored and it is such an amazingly underrated gem. It’s just a funny and honest film with a terrific cast. Go watch it. Here are some new beers out this month at the LCBO.

Intermediate
Fotor1104171035The F Word/What If + Fool’s Gold Loaf
My love for this movie is no secret. It’s coming out on DVD this month so I suggest you grab a copy and follow this recipe. They talk a lot about Elvis’ favorite snack in the movie and I’m dying to test it out. Bread, good. Jam, good. Peanut butter, good. Bacon, best. Put them all together and it has to work, right?!

Expert
Fotor1104171230Chef + Cuban sandwiches
Ever since I missed out on seeing this film in theaters, I’ve been waiting for it to come out on DVD. Finally my wait is over and I can devote an entire date night to making Cuban sandwiches, since apparently you can’t watch this movie without craving one. Here‘s a recipe I might try…or if all else fails, I’ll just head to La Cubana to get my fix.

Happy Hump Day!

Happy Halloween one and all! Looking forward to a relaxing night, playing board games and watching my go-to Halloween movies. But first, here are a few of my favorite things:
The best co-worker ever left a surprise on my desk!

A trip to IKEA to replace our bedroom lamp wasn’t complete without having Swedish meatballs (complete with chocolate milk in honor of our close friends, Chris & Megh, getting engaged)

The boyfriend says “I’m sorry” with books (comics included)

Two very good and very Halloween-appropriate brews that I recommend (for more, click here):

And last but not least, this week, I encountered the legendary ghost train during rush hour. I had a seat! There was this much empty space:

Happy Friday everyone! This week was super busy so I’m definitely looking forward to sleeping a lot this weekend in addition to catching up with all the shows I missed this week. But first here are some things I was grateful for this week (in case you don’t notice a recurring theme, they’re all food-related haha):

The simple but sentimental and sweet wedding cake from our dear friends’ wedding. It was from Bobbette & Belle. I hadn’t tasted their cake nor their macarons before. I’m happy to report that they’re both super yummy. Bonus, they opened their 2nd location just down the street from my apartment which could be a very bad thing, and by bad, I mean amazing.
IMG_3290.JPG

Speaking of the wedding, they had Colombian coffee as their favors since the bride is Colombian. They make my kitchen smell heavenly and they taste even better!
IMG_3314.JPG

More pumpkin beer! For my final verdict on the ones I’ve tasted this fall, click here.
IMG_3316.JPG

We also discovered these two gems. I found out that I like sour beers and Keith found out that he did not. He did like Dead Guy Ale however, which he initially just bought for the label.
IMG_3284.JPG

Finally, it was pretty rainy earlier in the week, so naturally I turned to my ultimate comfort food: ramen!

Hope everyone has a great and safe weekend!

Tasty Tuesday: My Top Five Pumpkin Beers

After sampling my fair share of pumpkin ales since they arrived at the LCBO (I admit, I was a little obsessed), I can now present my Top Five for this fall. Stock up on these babies for your Halloween party before they’re taken off the shelves!

If you want a hint of pumpkin…
BrooklynPostRoad4
Try Post Road Pumpkin Ale by Brooklyn Brewery. It’s the perfect introductory pumpkin beer for the uninitiated. Basically it’s a well-made beer with a side of pumpkin.

If you’re craving pumpkin pie…
229892f5906cf35c38416c2aca833dc3
Drink Nightmare on Mill Street Pumpkin Ale by Mill St. Brewery. It tastes just like sipping a slice of pumpkin pie with all those familiar, warm spices of nutmeg and cinnamon.

If a balanced beer is your brew…
cq5dam.web.1280.1280
Get Great Lakes’ Pumpkin Ale by Great Lakes Brewing. It’s in between the first two beers in terms of flavor. Not too mild, not too spicy, but like baby bear’s porridge, it’s just right. Plus it’s my favorite bottle design out of them all.

If you prefer something traditional…
beer_citriouolle
Pick up the top-rated St-Ambroise Citrouille by McAuslan Brewing. This beer is clean, crisp and has just the right amount of pumpkin to make you appreciate fall.

If you’re itching for something different…
beer_155043
Then Saison Dupump by Great Lakes Brewing is the way to go. One of my favorite beer styles made into a pumpkin ale? SOLD.

Happy Tuesday and happy drinking!
